Operating Costs

Many of our customers are curious about the extra electrical cost associated with some of our systems. The electrical consumption of some of our systems is very small. The electrical operating cost of our water filters and softeners are about the same as running an electric clock. We will show you how to calculate the electrical operating cost of not only our systems but any electrical device in your home. We have chosen two examples - radon air systems and water radon systems.

To calculate the operating cost of an electrical device you will need to obtain information that is always printed somewhere on the device. You must either find the number of watts it uses
or the full load current in amps and the voltage the unit operates at.

The equations that you will need are-
Equation #1

Power in Watts =

Current in amps X Voltage

Equation #2

Cost =

Power in watts X Time in hrs. X Price per KWH

1000

EXAMPLE 1:

The fans we presently use draw .54 amps under full load conditions. They operate at 120 volts.

First determine the power consumption in watts using equation #1-
Equation #1

Power in Watts =

.54 amps X 120 volts = 64.8 watts

If the cost of electricity is $.11 per KWH and the fan runs 8,760 hours (24 hrs. X 365 days)

T
hen using equation #2 -

Costs =

64.8 watts X 8760 hrs. X .11/KWH

= $62.44 per year or

1000

about 17 cents per day

EXAMPLE 2:

The total current draw for the system is about 15 amps and the voltage is 120.

First determine the power consumption in watts using equation #1-

Equation #1

Power in Watts =

15amps X 120 volts = 1800 watts

For a family of four the unit will run about .75 hrs. per day. So the total run time for a year will be about 273 hrs.

Then using equation #2

Costs =

1800 watts X 273 hrs. X .11/KWH

= $54.05 per year or

1000

about 15 cents per day
