Air & Water Quality Glossary

Reverse Osmosis

A water treatment process that removes dissolved solids from water by using pressure to force water molecules through a semipermeable membrane. The dissolved minerals are washed to drain with the portion of water that does not move through the membrane.

This process is called "reverse" osmosis because the pressure forces the water to flow against natural osmotic pressure.
