Average Pump Test

These instruction will help you determine the average pumping rate of your well pump over the normal pump cycle.
1. Make sure no water is being used before you perform this test.
2. Draw water until the pump comes on. Immediately after the pump comes on, shut off the water and record the length of time the pump runs to refill the pressure tank. This time is the time it takes the pump to pump the volume of water stored in the tank.
3. Draw water from the pressure tank into a calibrated 5 gallon bucket and shut the water off immediately after the pump starts.
4. Record the volume of water drawn in step 3. This volume of water is referred to as the draw down volume and is the volume of water pumped to refill the pressure tank.
5. Divide the gallons drawn in step 3 by the time in seconds recorded in step 2 and then multiply by 60. This will give you the average pumping rate over a normal pump cycle in gallons / min.
